Pairs of students determined the identity of unknown samples of plastics by determining their density. They did so by measuring the volume using a graduated cylinder and water, and the mass using a digital balance. Then they investigated a number of metal objects, keys, valves, hardware, plumbing fixtures, fishing tackle, and coins to find out which one was made of zinc. The answer...pennies!
Plastic Samples: Polyamide (nylon), Phenolic Resin, Polytetrafluoroethylene (teflon), Acrylic, Polyvinyl chloride (vinyl), Polypropylene, Polystyrene, and
Polyurethane
Who correctly identified the most unknowns? Nate, Will and Charley (TMS helpers) - six
Grant and Grace (Monday) - five
Nora (Tuesday) - five
Who found the zinc? Monday: Elizabeth & Sydney, Amelia & Ellie, and Jessica
