We investigated the chemical and physical properties of six white powders: baking soda, corn starch, table salt, polyethylene powder, talcum powder, and citric acid. Students recorded the powders' reactions with water, iodine, bromothymol blue (a ph indicator), and vinegar. With these observations in hand, they repeated the investigations on mixtures containing any two of the above. Many were able to accurately identify the two components.
